Abandoned Edinburgh restaurant above train station to be demolished under new plans

A former Edinburgh restaurant is set to be demolished if plans are approved by the city council.

Prior notification for the demolition of Sombrero has been put forward by Network Rail, with the hope of flattening the entire site next to Ryrie's Bar.

Sitting above Haymarket Station, the Mexican takeaway has lay derelict for some time, after a fire destroyed a significant amount of the building in April 2018.

Firefighters had worked through the night to try and save the eatery, after the roof of the burrito restaurant caught alight. Images taken at the time saw flames ripping their way through the building, with a huge section of the roof disintegrated.

Since 2018, minimal work has been done on the site, with the Sombrero branding still on the shop front today.

However, in an application submitted by Network Rail on July 21, it confirmed that the travel operator hope to remove the building for good.

In the application, they said: "The building is currently in a state of disrepair due to a fire three years ago.

"We propose to demolish the current buildings leaving the footprint in a backfield state and install hoarding in place of the original front wall of the building to ensure there is a barrier for the public."

It is unclear whether there are future plans for another building to replace the restaurant, however Network Rail have stated that a hoarding wall will be put in place to protect the public from the rail tracks below.
