Abandoned dog with fur so matted she could barely walk is transformed after haircut

An abandoned dog found with so much matted fur that she could barely move is unrecognisable after a much-needed haircut.

Mopsy was left to fend for herself before being found on a busy motorway by a passing driver.

Volunteers at the animal shelter she was taken to struggled to tell her gender because she had so much fur, Team Dogs reports.

But she is now looking much healthier and happier after having more than 700g of matted fur cut from her coat.

Patty Mugan, 33, transfer coordinator at Valencia County Animal Shelter in Los Lunas, New Mexico, USA, immediately began trying to find Mopsy a new home and posted her pictures on Facebook.

Patty said: "She was not able to be easily handled and very uncomfortable to say the least.

"I was hired here in February 2009 after one year of volunteering prior to that.

"In those days, a little dog like this would have never even made it to the kennels. She would’ve been euthanised immediately."

Volunteer rescue group Pawsitive Life reached out to Patty and arranged to pick seven-year-old Mopsy up to take her to the groomers.

They removed a whopping 1.6 pounds (725g) of thick fur from the Schnauzer/Shih Tzu mix over two hours, but discovered a tumour underneath.

The groomer estimated the long hair on Mopsy had been growing out for a year and a half, and the tumour could have been growing for two years to reach that size.

Director of Pawsitive Life Rescue, Allie Sikorski said: “She is likely not someone’s pet, she was likely hit by a car a few years back and got a hernia.

"The large tumour is actually her intestines sitting on the outside of her body.”

After her trim and a once-over by the vet, Mopsy is now happily recovering in a foster home - but she now needs $2,500 (£1,810) dollar surgery to treat the hernia before she can be adopted.
