Aasu leader lynched in Jorhat, 10 arrested

GUWAHATI: A 23-year-old All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) leader was lynched by a mob of around 50 people in upper Assam's Jorhat district on Monday afternoon when he and his two friends went to help an accident victim.

The deceased, Animesh Bhuyan, hailed from Golaghat district. Two of his friends - Mridusmanta Baruah and Pranay Datta - sustained injuries in the incident. Police have arrested 10 people in connection with the case so far.

SP (Jorhat) Ankur Jain rushed to the spot and launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident took place at the Nirmal Chariali in Jorhat town when the trio had gone to help the accident victim. "As per eyewitnesses, when Animesh, Mridusmanta and Pranay went to help the person, he blamed them for the accident and a mob suddenly started thrashing the trio. Animesh was declared dead at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital," police said.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured of a proper probe into the case. Aasu general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah demanded arrest of the culprits within 24 hours.
