Get ready to eat the rich (or more specifically, Mark Zuckerberg), because we’re officially getting a sequel to the Facebook origin story,The Social Network.
Rumblings of a follow-up to the 2010 original — which chronicles the birth and meteoric rise of Facebook — were confirmed by Deadline, with original screenwriter Aaron Sorkin reportedly on board as both the writer and the director of the sequel.
What will The Social Network Part II be about?
According to reports, the upcoming movie is titled The Social Network Part II (not The Social-er Network?), but won’t be a straight sequel as much as a “follow-up to the original”, an insider said.
While that makes about as much sense as a Facebook bot, we do know that the not-sequel will cover The Facebook Files, an explosive series of articles written by Jeff Horowitz for the Wall Street Journal back in 2021.
Those articles examined the inner workings of Facebook, the harm it causes, as well as the company’s internal efforts to bury such findings. Juicy as hell!
As for the specific harms caused by Facebook (beyond being a void into which your estranged uncle screams), Sorkin has teased what might play into the sequel’s premise on multiple occasions.
Last year, the writer-director said he “blame[s] Facebook for January 6“, in reference to the insurrection on the U.S. capitol in 2021.
When asked to explain the comment, Sorkin said audiences were “gonna need to buy a movie ticket”, and spoke more broadly about how Facebook is “tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible because that is what will increase engagement”.
Despite these previous comments, sources say The Social Network Part II is not just a January 6 movie, and will also focus on the platform’s impact on teens and preteens.
Who is cast in The Social Network Part II?
It’s not yet known whether Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed Zuckerberg in the original film, will return for the follow-up. However there are rumours floating around on which other A-Listers will be joining the cast.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Sorkin has taken meetings with Oscar winner Mikey Madison and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White to suss them out for the movie. The publication speculates that Madison would play Frances Haugen, the whistleblower who went to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal with her info on the Facebook Files.
White could be up for playing the former WSJ tech reporter who leads the breaking of the Facebook files.
Variety, reports that Jeremy Strong is circling the role for Marky Z himself and I need my Succession baddie in a perm and a gold chain stat!
The Social Network was directed by David Fincher, and went on to win an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Zuckerberg himself wasn’t too chuffed with the flick and described it as “weird” upon its release.
