Aaron Rodgers set to become 'highest paid player in NFL history' with huge £150m offer

Aaron Rodgers is set to continue his Green Bay Packers career after being offered a new deal which will reportedly make him "the highest paid player in NFL history".

The quarterback had been considering his future with the team and in the sport as a whole, after a season of highs and lows.

He was named the NFL's MVP for the second consecutive year for his incredible individual performances.

But the 38-year-old missed out on the sport's ultimate prize, after his Packers side were denied an appearance in the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl with a playoff defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

Rodgers fanned the flames of speculation with a cryptic social media post in which he thanked his team-mates and other influences on his career for their "love and support".

It was seen by some as a possible farewell message, but that now appears not to be the case.

Instead, Rodgers is set to extend his American football career after being tempted with a mammoth offer from the Packers.

Clearly desperate to keep hold of their star quarterback, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that Green Bay have tempted him with a new four-year deal worth more than £150m.

The 38-year-old stands to make £38m per season by continuing his career with the Packers, in what Rapoport described as a "deal that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history".

"A monstrous commitment by GB for years to come," the analyst said.

Rapoport went on to reveal that Rodgers have given some serious thought to his future.

He had considered ending his NFL career and a potential move to join the Denver Broncos, before ultimately deciding that a change of scenery was not needed.

"This was no easy decision," he added. "Rodgers considered retirement and the #Broncos. In the end, the #Packers get it done. They commit to Aaron Rodgers for many years."

Rapoport also reported that the Packers intend to make the most of their new-found salary cap space to use their franchise tag on wide receiver Davante Adams.

That move means the 29-year-old, who was due to become a free agent, will be bound to stay with the team for another year.

Keeping Adams was made possible by the structuring of the Rodgers deal, which gave Green Bay the space on their wage bill to accommodate the wide receiver's salary.
