It will take some getting used to for Aaron Rodgers when he reports to training camp without longtime Packers receiver Randall Cobb at a nearby locker. The two have combined for 39 regular-season touchdowns since 2011. They go way back.
But with Tuesday’s news that Cobb signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, the Rodgers-Cobb duo officially came to a close.
In response to the signing, Rodgers bid farewell to Cobb with an Instagram post that quoted Shawshank Redemption because that’s one way to invoke the feels.
Rodgers wrote:
“I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged…And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.” #friendship #teammates #brothers #Packers
Sound familiar? It was from this portion of Stephen King’s book and movie.
Cobb too reacted to his new team with a movie reference, opting to go with a Toy Story 2 GIF to announce the news on Twitter.
But it’s clear Rodgers chose that quote for a reason: Randall Cobb will be missed in Green Bay.
