Aaron Ramsdale statistic confirms Arsenal star's path to overtake Chelsea's Edouard Mendy

Chatter around who is the better goalkeeper out of Aaron Ramsdale and Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy continues to be a big talking point in the football community right now.

Ramsdale truly levelled up his performance against Leicester City, as he helped the gunners win 2-0 away from home - producing some fine saves in the game too.

The Arsenal Way's presenter and writer Tom Canton (TC) spoke with Football Scouting Writer, Josh Williams (JW) on Tuesday afternoon’s Analysing Arsenal show and spoke about Ramsdale’s incredible display.

TC: “On Ramsdale’s save from Maddison, there was some debate on whether it was a good save or not, which you may have seen online. Was it a good save Josh? Or was it just a routine day at the office for the goalkeeper?”

JW: “Well, I think that’s just typical Twitter galaxy brain stuff, to be honest. People trying to overthink it and be clever. It was a tough safe. I’ll be honest I had Ramsdale on my bench in Fantasy Football, so I’m not too happy.

“But, his saving so far this season, I use a method related to expected goals. It’s called post-shot expected goals and it targets solely the shots on target that a goalkeeper faces.

“It determines or not whether he should face those shots. So basically if a goalkeeper saves exactly in line with his post-shot expected goals, then he’s saved to an average standard.

“If it’s below it, his goalkeeping has been below average. If he saves above it, his goalkeeping has been above standard. So, far this season only Edouard Mendy is overperforming against Ramsdale.

“So, only Edouard Mendy has prevented goals above expectation than Ramsdale has. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of that originated from this Leicester game.”
