Aaron Ramsdale explains what was going through his mind before stunning Arsenal save against Leicester City

Aaron Ramsdale shared an insight into the stunning save he made during Arsenal’s win away at Leicester City yesterday.

Despite some of the criticism leveled at the club amid their summer chase to sign the 23-year-old, Ramsdale has been a particular standout during a recent run of good form for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Coming into the side in the wake of the 5-0 defeat away at Manchester City in August, the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth custodian has played in every minute of Arsenal’s last seven league games, conceding only four times in that process.

Statistically, the £30m signing is also one of the highest performing shot-stoppers in the Premier League too, boasting a post-shot expected goals (which measures how likely an attacker is expected to score based on the quality of chance) rating of +0.7 (positive numbers indicate an above-average average ability so save from such chances), which is the sixth-highest in England’s elite division.

During the win at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, Ramsdale caught the eye with a spectacular save from a James Maddison free-kick, a display of such athletic ability it had Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel describing it as the “best save” he’d seen in “years”.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Ramsdale shared his view on the matter.

“Maddison is a top free-kick taker. I’ve come up against him a couple of times in the league and training with the Under-21s so I was worried he was going to reverse it,” he said.

“He didn’t have too much pace on it which allowed me to get there, but it was just one of those days where it seemed like I was saving everything which was thrown at me and the lads were blocking everything - top day all round.”
