Aaron Ramsdale drafted in to compete with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at Euro 2020

Aaron Ramsdale has been called up to the England squad following the withdrawal of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson through injury.

The uncapped shot-stopper missed the initial cut from the 26-man squad as Ben White, Jesse Lingard, Ben Godfrey, Ollie Watkins and James Ward-Prowse as Mason Greenwood also withdrew following an underlying injury.

Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a thigh injury which saw him replaced by Ben White in the final squad, but Henderson becomes the latest name to leave the camp.

Kalvin Phillips and Raheem Sterling combined as the Manchester City forward fired beyond Dominik Livakovic as the Three Lions earned their first-ever win in the opening game of the European Championships.

Jordan Pickford started in their win over Croatia at Wembley, but the hip injury to the United goalkeeper means a new player has been drafted in to compete with the Everton and England number one ahead of the remaining two group matches against Scotland and the Czech Republic.

UEFA regulations allow a goalkeeper to be replaced on medical grounds at any stage.

On Monday, the Football Association released a statement saying: "(Dean) Henderson withdraws with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament.

"The Manchester United goalkeeper will now return to his club for further assessment and rehabilitation ahead of the 2021-22 season."

Ramsdale and fellow England Euro 2020 teammates Reece James and Mason Mount have already tasted European Championships glory at the U19 tournament in 2017 as they overcome Portugal 2-1 in the final.

The 23-year-old expressed his delight at the call-up but passed on his regards to Henderson.

"While I’m delighted to be joining back up with England, my immediate thoughts are with Deano as I know how much it meant to him to be involved," He said in a post on Instagram. "I have now been given the honour and to be involved in a major tournament is what dreams are made of. This is a special moment for me and my family."

England welcome Scotland on Friday night as the oldest international fixture in the world has its latest instalment.

Steve Clarke's side were beaten in their opening fixture against the Czech Republic as Patrik Schick scored twice to dampen the party atmosphere at Hampden Park on Monday.
