Aaron Ramsdale deserves fresh chance to stake Arsenal claim - if Mikel Arteta is true to his word

If Mikel Arteta is true to his word, then Aaron Ramsdale deserves a recall and another chance to prove why he should be Arsenal No1.

David Raya has failed to convince since replacing Ramsdale last month and had another nervy night in Seville.

Raya had a jittery moment in the final moments when he almost punched a cross into his own net, while a loose pass in the first half gifted Sevilla possession in a dangerous position.

“No one is guaranteed a spot, I don’t guarantee it,” said Arteta after Raya replaced Ramsdale. If that is the case, then Ramsdale can justifiably feel he deserves another run in the team.

The Englishman is set to play next week when Arsenal travel to West Ham in the Carabao Cup — and that feels like a big night for him.

If Ramsdale plays well, as he did on his last appearance in the competition, then the scrutiny on Arteta and Raya will only increase.

Raya was caught out by Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross on Saturday and has had some shaky moment with his feet, but he is yet to cost Arsenal dearly and it should be noted how much he is being tasked with playing out from the back.

Arsenal did that when Ramsdale was in the team but are doing so to a greater extent with Raya, who at times is basically a third centre-back.

But the worry for Arteta is one of these errors will eventually come back to bite him.
