Aaron McGowan: Accies won't take Edinburgh City lightly - we want a cup run

Aaron McGowan says nobody at Hamilton Accies will be taking Scottish Cup opponents Edinburgh City lightly – because they want a cup run.

James McDonaugh’s League Two title challengers arrive at New Douglas Park on Saturday, January 18, for the fourth-round tie, and Aaron says it’s time they did well in the competition.

He said: “We had a winter break, so we had a week off and then it was straight into a camp down at Largs, which was all preparations for Edinburgh City.

“Since I have been here and, I’ve heard, before I got here, we haven’t done too well in the Scottish Cup.

“A lot of fans want a cup run, so we have to try and deliver that for them, and we want it ourselves.

“We will be favourites, going into that game, but you’ve got to earn the right to be favourites. We’re not going to take it lightly, we know they will pose a good threat.”

McGowan says Hamilton's 2-1 derby win at Motherwell was a badly needed result that he hopes sets them up well for the second half of the season.

He said: "It's a massive boost. The way it has gone in the last few games we're probably a wee bit gutted that we didn';t have another game to carry on the momentum, but we have put ourselves into a better position than we were in before the Christmas break, and that's the most important thing.

"Hopefully we can build on it now and, going forward, we will be OK."
