Aaron Hughes and Conor Sammon to leave Hearts when contracts expire

Aaron Hughes and Conor Sammon will leave Hearts upon the expiry of their contracts in the coming days.

The Northern Irish defender arrived at Tynecastle initially on a six-month deal in January 2017 under Ian Cathro. He’s appeared 42 times for the Jambos over two-and-a-half-years, but it’s been his influence in the dressing room and on the club’s younger player that has been invaluable.

It is expected Hughes will announce his retirement after a distinguished career that saw him make over 650 professional appearances for the likes of Newcastle Utd, Aston Villa, Fulham and others.

He’s also a legend for his country, being Northern Ireland’s most capped outfield player ever. He’s set to get a send of from the Green and White Army after he and teammate Michael Smith were called up to Michael O’Neill’s squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Estonia and Belarus.

Another confirmed to be leaving Hearts is Conor Sammon. He’s spent three years at Hearts since signing from Derby County in 2016, but two-and-a-half of those were spent out on loan at Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and Motherwell respectively.

The club also confirmed that Conor Shaughnessy and Demetri Michell’s loans from Leeds and Manchester Utd have anded and they return to their parent clubs.
