Redemption was sweet for Aaron Hickey as he scored his first goal for Bologna tonight in their Serie A game against Genoa on Tuesday.
Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side were battered 6-1 by reigning champions Inter Milan at the weekend, keeping them in ninth place in Serie A, and the left-back was monstered by Denzel Dumfries during the fixture, earning a slaughtering from the press in Italy.
The papers across the pond claimed the Bologna boss “made a mistake” keeping Hickey in play for as long as he did, despite his substitution for Mitchell Dijks in the second half.
Mihajlovic kept faith in the young Scotsman, starting him again against the Grifone and his faith was rewarded with Hickey’s his first goal for the Italian side.
After some pinball in the area, the former Hearts defender hit a rocket of a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner that Genoa keeper Salvatore Sirigu had no chance of saving.
It marked not only his first goal for the Italian side but also only the second goal of his professional career.
Unfortunately Hickey’s finish wasn’t enough to maintain the lead for Bologna, conceding a mere six minutes after the Glaswegian’s shot hit the back of the net.
Hickey was substituted on the 80th minute, once again coming off for Dijks.
After penalties for both sides in the last five minutes of the game, and a sending off for Bologna boss Mihajlovic after his reaction to the 89th minute equaliser penalty, the match finished all square and the point sees Bologna move up to sixth place in Serie A.
