Aaron Hickey handed Bologna debut as former Hearts starlet's Serie A journey kickstarts with huge chance

Former Hearts defender Aaron Hickey will make his Bologna debut on Monday night.

The 18-year-old has been selected to face Parma by Rossoblu manager Sinisa Mihajlovic in place of first-choice left-back Mitchell Dijks.

The Dutch defender is suspended after he received a red card in the dying minutes of Bologna's opening game of the Italian season, a 2-0 defeat at AC Milan courtesy of two Zlatan Ibrahimovic goals.

Hickey was unavailable for that match but was finally unveiled by the Serie A side in a hilarious Loch Ness Monster themed Twitter video last week after arriving in Italy earlier this month.

And interestingly, the Scotland youth international will wear the traditional number 3 of a first-choice left-back.

Hearts earned a transfer fee of around £1.5million for their star defender.

German giants Bayern Munich were also chasing Hickey but the lure of first-team football at a place he describes as a "family club" appealed more than fighting his way out of the Bavarians' reserves side.

Manchester City were also credited with an interest, as were Celtic - who received a 30 per cent cut of Hickey's fee after previously playing for them in his youth days.
