Aaron Hickey earns Bologna rave reviews as Italian media gives former Hearts star big licks

Former Hearts youngster Aaron Hickey earned rave reviews after being thrown into the Bologna side for his debut.

The 18-year-old played from the start in the Derby dell'Emilia against Parma, becoming just the fifth Scot to play in Serie A.

Hickey played 80 minutes and went off to a standing ovation from the crowd of 1,000 as his side secured a 4-1 win over their local rivals.

Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic threw the youngster straight in thanks to Mitchell Dijks' suspension and saw his faith rewarded as the Scotland Under-17 international put in a fine performance.

The Serb, who was a fine left-back in his playing days, admits that he took a calculated risk.

Mihajlovic said in his post-match press conference: "He did well but he's not ready yet.

"He doesn't speak Italian yet and he has to improve a few things but he's a lad with quality and personality who did well today.

"Right up to the end I wasn't sure whether to play him, because I had other players who have already started in that role, but I like to take risks.

"Hickey has both personality and quality, he has a great future ahead of him. He's lively and is learning already.

"We scored individual goals today, which is why I almost can't enjoy the win. However, there was an age difference of 32 years between the two sides, and I'm pleased about that.

"I enjoyed Hickey's performance, I saw the Bologna that I wanted to see. I'm happy because you could see all the things we've been working on over the past week.

"We scored four, but could've had two or three more."

And that risk appears to have paid off, with Hearts graduate Hickey winning praise for his performance.

In Gazzetta dello Sport's man-by-man ratings the coach was braved for taking the right decision in starting the 18-year-old.

And Hickey himself was awarded a 7/10, a good mark by the paper's tough standards.

Gazzetta said: "Debuted at 18 as if he'd always played here.

"In the first half he showed personality and quality, a player who was bought for almost nothing."

The youngster also impressed viewers, with social media full of praise for his performance.

Here's some of the reaction from Italy.

@maxi_ran: "Hickey - he's really not bad this fearsome Scottish kid."

@ale__pesca: "Give me 1/10th of Hickey's personality and I'll split the world."

@francescnardi: "What personality! #Hickey"

And one viewer even felt that Andy Robertson 's Liverpool mistake had something to do with events at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

@delinquentweet: "Howler from Robertson, who probably felt Hickey's breath on his neck."
