The young full-back has earned rave reviews at Bologna this season for his displays in Serie A.
The ex- Hearts kid – who has a contract until 2024– has bagged four goals for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side.
Italian giants AC Milan have also registered an interest and will step up their pursuit of Hickey if Theo Hernandez moves on, with the likes of Chelsea also keen.
But Villa and Gerrard could steal a march as he looks to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.
The ex-Rangers gaffer is keen to bolster his options ahead of the second half of the Premier League campaign – and Hickey is on a shortlist of potential targets.
The 19-year-old moved to Bologna in 2020 from Tynecastle and is now a regular starter in Serie A.
Hickey’s form this season has put him on the verge of a Scotland call-up and another dream move this year.
