Aaron Hickey back in Scotland U21 squad as Scot Gemmill names group to face Denmark

Aaron Hickey is in line to win their first Scotland Under 21 cap after being called-up to Scot Gemmill’s squad for the European Championship qualifier against Denmark next month.

Bologna full-back Hickey became the first Scot to score in Serie A in 35 years this week with a stunning 20 yard strike in the 2-2 draw with Genoa.

And the former Hearts ace has been rewarded for his form with a call-up from Gemmill ahead of the crunch with the Danes at Tynecastle.

Hickey pulled out of the squad through injury after receiving his only previous call-up a year ago.

But he will face tough competition for the left-back slot with Hibs star Josh Doig also being called-up.

The 19-year-old, Scotland’s young player of the year last season, won his first cap in the 1-1 draw in Turkey which opened the Scots’ Group I campaign earlier this month.

Denmark sit second having beaten Kazakhstan 1-0 in their opener with Gemmill’s side two points behind in third.

Originally due to be played away from home, the match has been will now be played at Tynecastle Park on Thursday, 7 October, following request from Denmark to reverse the fixture.
