MIAMI _ Aaron Gordon scored 16 points in the third quarter and the Orlando Magic overcame a stretch when they missed 15 consecutive field goals in the first half, eventually pulling away for a 105-90 victory at American Airlines Arena on Tuesday night.
The Heat tried to rally late, but D.J. Augustin's 3-pointer with 1:37 left was the dagger the Magic needed, bumping the Orlando lead to 13 points. The Magic ended a six-game road stretch 3-3 and improved to 12-12 this season.
Gordon had just four points in the first half and made only 1 of 8 floor shots, but he was fired up in the third. The Magic swingman made 6 of 7 shots after halftime and his play sparked an Orlando run. The Magic turned a four-point intermission deficit into a 14-point lead, their biggest of the game, at the end of the third quarter.
Orlando ended the third with a 16-2 run, during which the Heat missed 6 of their last 7 shots of the quarter. Miami was 5 of 21 in the period while the Magic warmed up, hitting 12 of 24.
Gordon also had another big night on the boards against the Heat. He grabbed 16 rebounds during the season-opening victory over Miami and Tuesday night had 13 rebounds. He added a game-high 20 points, posting a double-double. Nikola Vucevic also had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Terrence Ross added 19 points off the bench and was one of six Magic players to finish with double-figure scoring.
The Magic were rolling right along in the first half, shooting at a 50-percent clip overall and even better from long range, hitting 6 of their first 8 3-point attempts. Orlando led 27-22 with 2:52 left in the first quarter, but then the team hit a drought.
The Magic missed their next 15 field-goal attempts, a lull stretching into the second quarter, and the Heat took advantage. Miami outscored Orlando 14-1 during the next 6:30, with the Heat storming back to take a 31-28 lead. The Magic kept pace the rest of the half and trailed 50-46 at the break.
