Aaron Doherty tributes pour in after death of Derry teenager

Aaron Doherty has been described as "just the best child you could have wished for" by his doting father.

The 17-year-old, from Derry, is the first person under the age of 20 to have died after having tested positive for coronavirus.

Aaron, who was recently diagnosed with a condition called Cushing Syndrome, sadly passed away on Tuesday at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Aaron's father, Jim, said his son had tested positive for Covid-19 last month and last week received a negative test result and then had taken ill on Monday night.

“He was just the happiest child you could ever have met and was just so loved," he told Derry News.

“He was a really bad colour and we phoned the out-of-hours service and the doctor phoned us back.

“When we described Aaron's symptoms, the doctor told us to ring an ambulance straight away.

“The ambulance arrived and the staff worked with him.

“He was wheeled into the back of the ambulance and I said 'I'll see you later' and he waved back.

“That was the last time I saw him alive.”

Tributes have poured in for the young Derry teen, who was a huge fan of Derry City and Celtic FC.

Ballymoor FC, where Aaron previously played, said they were sad to hear the news of Aaron's passing.

The teenager’s funeral will take place on Friday following a service at St Columba’s Church, Long Tower.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the wake and funeral are strictly private for immediate family only.
