Aaron Connolly an injury concern for Ireland after coming off for Brighton

Aaron Connolly is an injury concern for Ireland ahead of the games with New Zealand and Denmark.

The Brighton teenager - who was elevated to senior international ranks only last month - has a groin injury and requires a scan.

Connolly came off at half-time in Brighton’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

“Aaron will have a scan (this morning),” said McCarthy tonight.

“Our medical team have been in contact with Brighton and when we have the results we will know more.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy saw David McGoldrick denied a first Premier League goal and fumed: “VAR is ruining football’.

Ireland striker McGoldrick hit the net for Sheffield United in their 1-1 draw away to Tottenham on Saturday.

But after a lengthy review, it was chalked off as team-mate John Lundstram’s toe was ruled offside in the buildup.

McCarthy said: “There have been some ridiculous decisions.

“VAR was going to stop us talking about refereeing decision and now we’re talking about VAR decisions.

“To take three-and-a-half minutes, they almost found a reason to disallow the goal. It was the most ridiculous decision ever.”

McCarthy added: “I’m not a fan of it. I don’t see them changing it but as a spectacle it’s ruining the game.”

The Ireland players arrived into camp in Dublin this evening ahead of tomorrow’s first training session ahead of the New Zealand friendly and Denmark qualifier.

And McCarthy was buoyed by Darren Randolph’s return for Middlesbrough at the weekend after missing three games with a thigh injury.

“We have a good in at Middlesbrough with Robbie Keane there so I fully expected him to play against QPR,” McCarthy told FAI TV.

“I’d also been texting Darren myself and he was always confident that he would be available for Denmark.”

Shane Duffy and Matt Doherty both got 90 minutes today for Brighton and Wolves respectively.
McCarthy confirmed that Shamrock Rovers ace Jack Byrne will win his second cap in Thursday’s friendly against New Zealand.

The Ireland boss was at the PFA Ireland awards on Saturday night to present Byrne with the Player of the Year award.

At that function, McCarthy spoke unprompted about Richard Keogh who has been sacked by Derby for his part in a car crash after a boozy night out.

Keogh was a back seat passenger and McCarthy said: “I was on to Richie and the PFA just to make sure they were all looking after him because I’m astounded with what’s going on there, I really am.

“If Richard had got in an Uber and the Uber driver was drunk, I don’t think they’d have sacked him would they?.”
