Aamsu dharna in Delhi over Dholpur

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Minorities Students' Union (Aamsu) staged a sit-in at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday, demanding rehabilitation of the evicted families of Dholpur in Garukhuti in Assam's Darrang district.

The two-hour protest was against the alleged "selective", "arbitrary" and "inhuman" evictions carried out by the Assam government in various districts of the state.

"Such evictions have rendered thousands of Indian citizens homeless, forcing them to lead a beastly nomadic life in this pandemic situation. Such actions of the state government without proper rehabilitation of its citizens have infringed on the basic human rights of its citizens and more specifically have jeopardized women and child rights," said Aamsu adviser Ainuddin Ahmed and president Rejaul Karim Sarkar in a statement.

In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Aamsu said the evicted families in Darrang are facing shortage of food, drinking water, medicine and shelter. "Two children of the evicted families in Garukhuti (Darrang) are reported to have died due to seasonal cold," the statement said.

They rued that "atrocities" against the minority communities of Assam on the pretext of eviction should be stopped and those affected should be rehabilitated by providing land and other basic amenities without further delay.

Aamsu further demanded that the now stagnant NRC preparation process should be restarted. "The excluded 19 lakhs people from the final NRC should be given the opportunity to appeal against their exclusions as per rules," said Ainuddin.

The student body alleged that it is a matter of concern that a large number of people has not yet been provided with an Aadhaar card in Assam on one pretext or another thereby depriving them from various benefits.
