AAF QB Christian Hackenberg’s benching reminds Zach Mettenberger of his days with the Titans

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger is officially back to football after making his first on-field appearance on Saturday since 2016.

But the reasoning behind it is a situation he’s all too familiar with. One he’s been on the wrong side of in the past when he was surpasses by current Titans quarterback, Marcus Mariota.

Mettenberger was given the go-ahead to enter the game by head coach Mike Singletary after Christian Hackenberg was benched for the second half. Hackenberg threw two interceptions — including one on the very first play of the game.

While Mettenberger is grateful for the opportunity and situation he now finds himself in, he feels for the former starter.

“You definitely have to be supportive of your guys. I’ve been in his shoes before, and it’s not easy,” Mettenberger said in the postgame press conference. “You have to be ready to roll. The reason why I got to play is unfortunate, but I’m definitely excited to be playing again.”

Mettenberger was 9-of-12 passes for 120 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He led a compelling fourth quarter rally, but the Express ultimately fell short, dropping to 0-3 after the 21-17 loss on the road.

Mettenberger was officially named the starter on Monday, and will take the field in Week 4 against the San Diego Fleet.
