Aadhaar-like International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore platform launched in several nations

BENGALURU: The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB) announced that a platform - Modular Open Source Identity Project (MOSIP) - an equivalent of India's Aadhaar, developed by the institute, is being rolled out in multiple countries.

The project, like Aadhaar, provides a unique ID card for all citizens. The platform has been given for free by the institute and is currently being used by Philippines and Morocco. Discussions are under way to use it in five other countries, including Sri Lanka and Ethiopia.

MOSIP was showcased alongside UPI, CoWin and other innovations at the India pavilion of Vivatch, Paris, a tech event held recently.

While the platform was developed in 2018, it is being rolled out in various countries now. "We donate the platform, which is then configured with the policies of respective countries. It has a complex code of 15 lakh lines developed by the institute. We have various features like citizen-centric data entry for data protection. Philippines has already rolled it out for its 67 million citizens," explained Prof Debabrata Das, director, IIITB, at a press conference on Sunday.

IIITB is also developing a 'data lake', along with the state department of e-governance. "It is a project to integrate data from various departments to understand certain indicators of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals and thus help the departments plan their policies better," the director explained.

On Sunday, the technology institute held its convocation, where 294 students received their degrees.
