AA Roadwatch to end radio traffic reports in blow to Irish motorists

AA Roadwatch will no longer broadcast the latest road traffic reports on Irish radio after 32 years of providing real-time information to motorists.

The service will be discontinued "effective immediately" but will still issue traffic updates on the outlet's social media channels and website.

AA Roadwatch first began its radio broadcasts in Ireland in September 1989 on RTE Radio One.

Since then, it has become a valuable resource for people travelling the country's roads thanks to its morning and evening bulletins, as well as its live updates online.

Several well-known Irish personalities also began their media careers there, including Doireann Garrihy, Lorraine Keane and Nuala Carey.

Don Brennan, managing director of AA Insurance, acknowledged that many listeners will miss the traffic reports but added that the company feels "that now is a good time to move on".

"We are conducting a consultation process with the AA Roadwatch staff that is commencing today about the future of the editorial content direction of the brand," he said.

“We have decided to move away from this service and instead focus on growing other areas of our business. The raft of new GPS technologies and traffic information sources means a wealth of detail available to motorists from various sources."

He added: "We will still offer travel information, route planners, emergency advice, and reporting via our AA Ireland website and AA App.

“We will focus our efforts on other areas of motoring advice and editorial to add a richer experience to our existing and future customers and members and become the primary source for motoring information with several new multimedia-rich features set to be added in the Autumn.”

AA Ireland is owned by Carlyle Cardinal Ireland fund and Carlyle Global Financial Services Partners after they purchased the company for €156.6m in 2016 from AA PLC in the UK.
