Drivers are being urged to avoid the A77 south of Girvan this morning following an accident.
Recovery teams have been working since last night to clear the route, which remains closed in both directions.
It is understood high winds are hampering the recovery of a lorry involved in the accident.
The road between Girvan and Cairnryan, Wigtownshire is currently closed both north and southbound.
Diversions are in place with motorists reporting difficult driving conditions due to high winds.
Traffic Scotland confirmed: "The A77 is currently closed in both directions between Cairnryan and Girvan due to a road traffic incident.
"Motorists are advised to use the signed diversion and allow for longer than normal journey times."
