A75 in Dumfries and Galloway could be in line for an upgrade

The A75 could be in line for an upgrade.

The need for a “higher capacity and faster connection on the A75” between Cairnryan and the M6 was included in an interim report on from Sir Peter Hendy on the Union Connectivity Review published earlier this year.

And Boris Johnson has revealed that people will “not have too long to wait for the final recommendations from Sir Peter Hendy about the A75 and the other great features of union connectivity that this government hope to support”.

The Prime Minister was responding to a question from Carlisle MP John Stevenson on the need to upgrade the Euroroute as well as the A69 and the Borders Railway.

Mr Johnson’s comments were welcomed by Dumfries and Galloway MP and Scottish Secretary, Alister Jack.

He said: “It is clear the Prime Minister considers the A75 of strategic importance to the entire UK in streamlining transport connections across the four nations but it is important to carefully examine the wider picture.

“I’m looking forward to reading the conclusions of Sir Peter and his expert team as their independent assessment will be crucial in prioritising the infrastructure which will help strengthen and take the UK forward for generations to come.”

The report from Network Rail chairman Sir Peter Hendy also recommended a feasibility study into a rail or bridge link between Dumfries and Galloway and Northern Ireland.

A new report published last week claimed it would cost more than £40 billion to build a bridge between Dumfries and Galloway and Northern Ireland.

The British Ports Association, which commissioned the study, branded the idea as “a redundant and irresponsible use of public money”.
