A720 City Bypass closures announced causing disruption for Edinburgh drivers

Overnight closures are in place on the A720 City Bypass as drivers are told to expect diversions and delays.

Multiple overnight road closures will take place during this week as slip road closures are put in place on stretches of road while essential coring investigation works are carried out.

Closures began last night when the A720 westbound two-lane carriageway saw alternate lane closures and speed restrictions between Lasswade and Straiton.

Transport Scotland’s operating company, BEAR Scotland, are understood to be responsible for carrying out the works and have said that the works will last from Monday September 27- Saturday October 2.

Signed diversion routes for slip closures will be in place from 20:30pm to 06:00am but no overnight works are planned for either Saturday or Sunday.

The westbound slip road on the A720 at Straiton will be closed overnight on September 28. Drivers will be able to follow a signposted diversion route via the A720 eastbound, Lasswade Road, and the A720 westbound.

The westbound two-lane carriageway will see alternate lane closures overnight and speed restrictions at Straiton on September 29 and 30.

Whereas the A720 westbound two-lane carriageway will see alternate lane closures with speed restrictions between Dreghorn and Clovenstone on the night of October 1.

BEAR Scotland have said that a consultation took place between stakeholders before the works were carried out in order to ensure that all relevant actors were aware of the changes to traffic management.

A consultation has taken place with all relevant stakeholders in advance of these works to make them aware of the traffic management arrangements which will be removed during the daytime.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, told the Border Telegraph: “These investigation works on the A720 are essential to the design and planning of future resurfacing improvements.

“The traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, however, to help minimise delays we’ve planned the works to take place during night-time hours.

“We’d like to thank motorists in advance for their patience while our teams carry out these investigations.”

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Those using the roads are advised to plan ahead before undertaking any trips through the Traffic Scotland website www.trafficscotland.org
