A71 at Kilmarnock to close for essential maintenance this weekend

One of Ayrshire’s busiest roads will close this weekend for a summer spruce-up.

The A71 will be closed in both directions at certain sections across Saturday and Sunday.

Grass cutting and litter picking will form part of the essential maintenance works carried out by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance between the Bellfield Interchange at Kilmarnock and the Corsehill roundabout.

Works will start at 5am and are expected to be completed by 8pm, roads chiefs have said.

A statement published by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance reads: “Due to the nature and location of the works it will be necessary to implement full carriageway closures.”

On Saturday, the carriageway between Moorfield roundabout and Corsehill roundabout – near Holmsford Bridge crematorium – will be closed entirely to traffic.

While on Sunday, the entire carraigeway between the Bellfield Interchange and Moorfield Roundabout will be closed.

There will also be no access to on and off ramps.

A diversion will be put in place and Ayrshire Roads Allaince has apologised for the inconvenience of the work – but insisted it was essential to carry it out on the vital link.

The statement continued:“On Saturday, June 13, carriageway closures in both directions will be in place between the Moorfield roundabout and the North Ayrshire Council boundary/Corsehill roundabout. No traffic will be permitted.

“On Sunday, June 14, carriageway closures in both directions will be in place between the Bellfield Interchange and Moorfield roundabout.

“Carriageway closures will also be in place on the off/on ramps to B7038 Campbell Street, Kilmarnock. No traffic will be permitted.

“The full carriageway closures and works will be signed throughout and for the duration of the works.

“A roads diversion will be in place each way.

“The Ayrshire Roads Alliance, on behalf of East Ayrshire Council, apologise in advance for the inconvenience these works will inevitably cause to the travelling public in and around this area of Kilmarnock.

“However, these essential maintenance works are required to improve and enhance the A71 road corridor.”
