A702 closed: Busy route south of Edinburgh will remain closed for days due to burst water pipe

The busy A702 to the south of Edinburgh has been closed to traffic – and will remain shut for days – due to a burst water pipe.

Scottish Water confirmed this morning that they were forced to close the stretch of road between Nine Mile Burn and Hillend on Thursday evening so emergency repairs could be carried out. Engineers are required to repair a 36 inch raw water main which has burst near the Flotterstone Inn.

They say the road closure is likely to remain in-place until the start of next week – and they are aiming to have the works completed by Monday morning.

Diversions will be in place for the duration, with traffic heading south and going away from Edinburgh taking the A703 at Hillend, and rejoining the A702 via Penicuik.

North-bound traffic will also go via Penicuik on the A703, with the diversion in place at Nine Mile Burn just north of Carlops.

Scottish Water add: "Customers should not notice any impact to their water supply. The burst pipe carries raw water to Glencorse Water Treatment Works."
