A68 to reopen next week after floods caused road to cave in, leading to local traffic chaos

The A68 is expected to reopen early next week after severe rain left a gaping hole in the road near Fala.

BEAR Scotland say repairs to the collapsed embankment near Fala are on track for completion as programmed.

Locals had said diversions put in place around the landslip had caused road chaos, with HGVs forced through local East Lothian villages.

Debs Crompton from Fala Dam near the road closure took to Twitter saying A68 traffic had been diverted through the village.

She added: “Single track road, blind bends, no lighting or pavement and being passed at 60mph and by articulated lorries.”

BEAR Scotland, who manage the road, said the embankment has now been built back up close to road level and phase three of the repairs have begun, in which the road itself and associated infrastructure such as drainage, kerbing and the roadside safety barrier will be constructed.

“We’re very aware of the impact that this closure has had on road users and local communities and have been doing everything in our power to get these repairs completed safely as soon as possible.

"I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we complete the final phase of the works.”
