A666 St Peter's Way slip roads closed to manage traffic as Bolton tips reopen

Both tips in Bolton reopened this morning and due to expected demand there will be road diversions in place to control traffic flow.

The Raikes Lane tip is back open between 8am and 6pm every day, while the Salford Road recycling centre is only open on weekends (8am to 6pm on Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays).

A number of measures have been put in place to control numbers, including a traffic control system based on vehicle registrations.

Only bagged general waste will be allowed and everyone using the tips must bring a proof of address.

In addition, Bolton Council has announced that there will be no access to Raikes Lane from St Peter’s Way.

Northbound and southbound slip roads will both be closed to help manage traffic, and signposted diversions will be in place.

Signs have been placed along Manchester Road in anticipation for huge queues as people try to get rid of their household waste.

Bolton Council has anticipated queues of as long as two hours and signs are in place up to the building site which used to be United Utilities - around half a mile away from Raikes Lane tip.

Staff at the entrance to the tip are checking people's number plates and asking what sort of rubbish they are trying to dispose of. A Bolton Council van with a CCTV camera on top is also parked close to the entrance.

Despite the measures put in place, on Saturday morning, the tips were eerily quiet. When the Manchester Evening News attended at around 11.15am, there were only two cars using the facility, and it was a similar story at Salford Road.
