A52 Clifton Bridge fully reopens after 20 months

Clifton Bridge has completely reopened more than 600 days since it was first closed for repairs.

On February 6, 2020 the eastbound bridge was completely closed after engineers discovered corroded steel work within the concrete confines of the structure.

In the weeks following Nottingham became one of the most congested cities in the world, not helped by snowstorms, with commuters left in queues lasting more than three hours.

A painstaking £20m repair scheme has been taking place since the very first closure, with new steel cables being installed on the outside of the bridge, to strengthen the 1970s structure.

A new waterproof membrane has also been installed alongside new lighting and drainage, with workers using more than 75 tonnes of steel and 12,000 bags of concrete during the works.

Engineers and construction managers working on the bridge said they would never build a bridge as it was back in the 70s, with maintenance made difficult due to cramped conditions akin to a deep mine in some sections.

All lanes, including the Queen's Drive sliproad, reopened from 6am on Saturday, October 23.

Richard Waterfield, project manager for National Highways, said: "We're really pleased to get to the end of the project.

"Most of all we're eternally grateful to everyone who relies on the bridge - whether they're a motorist, whether they use a bus over the bridge, or whether they work close by and [they've] been diverted with diversion routes and whatnot.

"We thank everyone for their patience and understanding."
