A4174 Airport Road still closed six hours after crash - this is what we know

A mile-long stretch of Bristol's ring road is closed after a car crashed into a wall in the early hours of this morning, impacting traffic and nearby businesses.

The closure of the A4174 Airport Road is between the junction for Bamfield to West Town Lane Academy.

It was cordoned off after a motorist who failed to stop for police smashed into a wall at around 5.30am this morning.

The crash led to major traffic problems at rush hour.

The Bath Bus Company had to also divert its A4 service from the road.

A police spokesman said: "At just before 5.30am today, officers saw a vehicle being driven erratically in the Airport Road area of Bristol.

"The car failed to stop for the officers and a short time later it was in collision with a wall.

"The driver was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be serious or life-threatening.

"Enquiries are being carried out at the scene and the road is currently closed."

Garry Courtney, manager of a hair salon called This Is It, which is located just off Airport Road on Wells Road, said the road closure had caused disruption.

He said: “A lot of our trade comes from the Hartcliffe and Whitchurch areas, so a lot of our customers have missed their appointments this morning because they’ve obviously been diverted.

“It was a standstill on Woodchurch Lane this morning and it looks like Airport Road is still closed because no traffic is coming through.

“It’s been a dangerous road since they cut it down to one lane."

“I hope that the driver involved makes a speedy recovery and we wish him well.”

It's not yet known when the road will reopen. Motorists and the A4 bus route are still being diverted.
