A41 disruption to go on until March with lane closures between Port Sunlight and Birkenhead

Work on a major Merseyside commuter route will continue until March, causing more disruption for people trying to get to work.

The second phase of work on the stretch between Port Sunlight and Birkenhead resumed this week and will lead to lane closures on the road.

But Wirral Council has said that this phase of work will not see an entire side of the A41 bypass closed, unlike the first phase.

A spokesperson for Wirral Council, said: “The project is on track for the original scheduled completion date of March 2020. This second phase has been scheduled to be less intrusive to residents as the final works are completed.

“The work is currently concentrated at the Bolton Road northbound section.

“In response to drivers’ concerns about traffic build-up at the roundabout, council traffic management have placed signs to encourage motorists to use both lanes before vehicles merge on Bolton Road and adjustments had been made to traffic signal timings to minimise delays.”

Wirral Council said the £3.4m scheme, jointly funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Wirral Council, will “dramatically improve this key route”.

Key benefits of the work include improved traffic flow on the A41, more reliable journey times and reduced carbon emissions.

The spokesperson added: “This year will see the remaining 500 metres of safety fencing installed, the upgrading of 75 street lights and the installation of almost 50 road traffic signs.

“The project has already seen the installation of 8km of streetlight cabling and ducting, 5.5km of safety fencing, bridge deck waterproofing and jointing repairs and the resurfacing of 9.4km of road, making up a large proportion of the work.”
