A403 flooding results in clean-up operation after 'large scale pipe burst'

A cleanup operation is underway after a 'large scale pipe burst' flooded and closed the A403 in Avonmouth.

The incident caused water disruption due to low pressure for many homes in the area west of Bristol.

Bristol Water has apologised for 'for any interruption' to the supply.

A spokesperson for Bristol Water said it significantly affected water supplies to just five homes.

The incident occurred overnight between the roundabout at the Smoke Lane Poplar Road West junction and the Severn Road roundabout near the SUEZ recycling sites.

Bristol Water said in a statement on its website: "We are aware of a burst main on Severn Road.

"Our crew are currently on-site working to reroute the water supply to keep everyone in water, although this may be at a lower pressure until the repairs are completed.

"We apologise for any interruption to your supply."

The road remains closed today (Friday, July 2) and there are significant traffic delays this with congestion in Avonmouth along the A403 and onto the M5 towards junction 16 southbound.

In an update on Twitter, Bristol Water said: "We’ve been able to bridge over the damage, meaning virtually everyone will now be back in water supply now while we carry out the repair."

"If you’re travelling, please do avoid the area if you can, a diversion is in place."

Diversions are in place for road users.

A spokesperson from Bristol Water said that they hope the road will open tomorrow.
