A40 crash picture shows why you should only leave home for essential travel

Police have shared a picture of a serious crash in order to highlight why people need to stay at home during the coronavirus outbreak.

When crashes happen, it means additional NHS resources have to be drawn upon when they could be being used to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak instead.

Gloucestershire Constabulary shared a picture of a crash on the A40 with this very message, Gloucestershire Live reports.

Cotswolds police said on twitter: “A good day in the North Cotswolds was spoilt by a collision on the A40.

“This is why you need to only travel if the journey is essential.

Thankfully no one was injured.

“This took up valuable NHS, St John's Ambulance and police resources.”

The crash happened near the Gloucestershire border with Oxfordshire, near the Rissingtons and Burford.

The police force also issued fines to a group who travelled from Manchester to Bristol in order to pick up a car.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has warned motorists to take extra care and not speed.

It said in a general warning: "Emptier roads due to coronavirus are not an excuse to speed.

"If you are making an essential trip, do not speed: avoid collisions, keep safe and do not place any additional strain on our NHS during this extremely busy time."
