A369 closed to traffic after trees blown onto road by Storm Ciara

A busy commuter route from North Somerset into Bristol remains closed this morning after trees came down in Storm Ciara.

The A369 Martcombe Road has been closed while North Somerset Council contractors remove debris.

The work has been complicated by the fact that a power cable has become entangled in the trees.

The road is used by commuters travelling from Portishead into Bristol. The trees came down yesterday, causing the road to close.

Council spokesman Nicholas Yates said: “Our contractors have been working hard to clear debris.

“At the moment the A369 Martcombe Road is shut because one tree has fallen but is being propped up by other trees.

“There is a power cable in amongst the trees which Western Power has isolated and our crews are on site now to deal with the trees.

“The road will be re-opened once it’s safe to do so.”

Trees also came down at Wraxall Hill, Belmont Hill, Wrington Road and Woodlands Way in Portishead as winds of up to 80 mph battered the district.

Coastal areas also saw huge waves overtop sea defences.
