A2 Bangor Rd drivers face delays, diversions and closures until mid March

Commuters will face delays and diversions on the A2 Belfast to Bangor Road from February 24 for 10 days or more.

Work is being carried out on the stretch of road that carries 5,000 vehicles an hour at peak times to “aid road safety and traffic progression”.

The £200,000 scheme which is due to be completed by March 20, will enter its second phase next Monday at Ballymoney Road near Bangor, where new traffic signals will be co-ordinated with the existing signals on Craigdarragh Road.

A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure said: “In order to minimise inconvenience, the majority of work is being carried out at night.”

From 7.30pm to 6.00am Monday to Friday:

  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between the junctions of Carney Hill and Coyles Lane,
  • A temporary 30mph speed limit will be in place, and
  • A no overtaking Order will be in place during these hours.

And the Craigdarragh Road will be closed from 7.30pm to 6.00am Monday to Friday from February 24 to March 6 to facilitate the work on the A2.

During these times a diversion will be in place via:

And drivers of high sided vehicles should be aware of a low bridge on Bridge Road South with clearance for vehicles at 13’0’’ or 3.9 metres.

A department spokesperson said: “In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling in the vicinity of the works.

“While the majority of the work has been programmed to be carried out overnight, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys in the area.

“Work is expected to be completed by 20 March 2020 but this is dependent on favourable weather conditions.”
