A189 Spine Road crash in Cramlington involving car and lorry brings bank holiday traffic to a halt

Bank holiday traffic came to a halt in Northumberland after a crash involving a car and lorry.

The vehicles were travelling on the A189 Spine Road south near to Cramlington hospital when they collided and one of the vehicles ended up in a ditch on the side of the road.

A large section of the central reservation barrier - around 30 metres - was also left damaged in the smash.

Several fire engines, police and paramedics were called to the road just before the Moor Farm Roundabout at around 12.40pm on Monday.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service sent a fire engine from West Hartford as well as a Special Rescue Unit and two fire engines from Tyne and Wear Fire Service were called.

Two ambulances, a paramedic car and an officer from the North East Ambulance Service were called and two people were taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital nearby.

The road was closed off to traffic with diversions put in place but one lane was reopened at around 2.50pm.

Northumbria Police have asked drivers to find an alternative route during the closure.

Traffic has been building up on the road with queues tailing back to Blyth.

Officers have been carrying out a collision investigation while they wait for the car and lorry to be recovered.

They have also asked the council to fix the damage caused to the barrier.

It is not yet known when the road will be fully reopened.
