A189 in Northumberland closed for 10 hours after serious early morning crash

A busy road in Northumberland was closed for more than 10 hours after a vehicle crashed and caught fire in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency services were called to the A189 Spine Road at the North Seaton roundabout near Ashington just after 2am on Friday.

A vehicle had crashed and was on fire and the road was closed while police and paramedics were at the scene.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service has confirmed paramedics attended the crash at the roundabout and two double crewed ambulances were sent to the scene.

No further details were given on the people involved, but the collision was believe to be serious.

The road heading northbound towards the roundabout was closed for the rest of the morning and a diversion was put in place.

Traffic delays were reported on the road heading north during the Friday morning rush hour.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area until the road was reopened at around 12.30pm.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 2am today (Friday) we received a report of a vehicle that had crashed and was on fire at the North Seaton roundabout."

It is believed a collision investigation took place on the road before it was reopened.
