A1 shut and Clackmannanshire Bridge closures in place as Storm Arwen arrives in Scotland

The busy A1 road has been shut in both directions as winds of up to 84mph batter the east coast of Scotland.

The Clackmannanshire Bridge has also been closed to high sided vehicles due to the arrival of Storm Arwen.

The A1 is off limits between Thistly Cross roundabout near Dunbar, East Lothian, and Abbotsview Junction, as a red weather warning has been issued for this evening.

Wind speeds of up to 84mph are forecast for this evening where the trunk road bridges over the River Tyne near East Linton.

Traffic Scotland has announced that a diversion route is in place via the A199. This is expected to add approximately 10 minutes to affected journeys.

They also announced on Twitter that "the Clackmannanshire bridge is currently closed to high sided vehicles due to strong winds!"

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead for their journey.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s Network Manager for South East Scotland, said: “This section of the A1 includes an exposed bridge over the River Tyne, so with gusts up to 84mph forecast this evening we’ve closed it to all traffic for safety, in line with the bridge’s wind management plan.”
