A1 near Edinburgh will close to traffic this month with two-mile diversion

A stretch of the A1 will close to traffic near Edinburgh later this month.

The route will be off-limits between Old Craighall and Wallyford northbound on the evenings of Monday and Tuesday, May 24 and 25. This is so resurfacing works can be carried out by BEAR Scotland teams.

They say they'll be working to improve a 950 metre section of the road, creating smoother and safer journeys.

However the road will have to be closed between 7.30pm and 6am on the nights in question, with diversions signposted between Wallyford and Old Craighall junctions via the A6094, A68 and A720. This will add around two miles, an estimated seven minutes to journey times.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will significantly improve ride quality and safety for motorists using the A1 at this location.

“It is essential for safety that we close the northbound carriageway during these works, however we’ve scheduled them overnight in order to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding.”

BEAR Scotland say emergency services will still be given access through the works at all times.

Works will be carried out with strict physical distancing protocols in place, so government restrictions are met.
