Banbridge Councillor Brian Pope said he had been trying to meet with road chiefs about introducing safety measures on the A1 since a 75-year-old woman was killed on the road last month.

He wants the Department of Infrastructure to call an urgent meeting.

He said: "My immediate thoughts are with those who where involved in yet another serious traffic accident on the A1 on Sunday."

He added: "I was particularly distressed to hear that a child may also have been involved in this crash, so my thoughts are with them at this time."

Cllr Pope said data from the PSNI showed temporary safety measures were needed.

He said: “This accident causation information is need to clarify the reasons for traffic accidents over this period and help inform decisions on the requirement of urgent temporary road safety measures on this dangerous road."

Campaigners have long urged for upgrades to the "notorious A1", the main route from Belfast to Dublin between Sprucefield and Newry, and the site of numerous fatal crashes.
