A1 closed: Motorway closed in both directions to all traffic as drivers stuck for over an hour

Part of the A1 is closed this afternoon following what is being described as a serious road traffic collision, with lanes closed in both directions.

Traffic Scotland first shared news of the incident at 1.35pm today, with the accident taking place on the busy motorway between Wallyford and Meadowmill.

Lane two of both the east and westbound carriageways is blocked but now the whole road near Tranent has been closed to all traffic.

Emergency services are on route and traffic is being diverted via Tranent.

A driver stuck on the motorway told Edinburgh Live: "I've been here for an hour and 20 mins. At least 10 response vehicles have been past, two ambulances with blue lighting people back towards A&E at the Royal Infirmary.

"Cars have parked to form a route for the ambulance and police."

In an update at 1.55pm Traffic Scotland reported that emergency services were on the scene and that drivers should expect longer journey times.

There has been no indication of the nature of the incident - Edinburgh Live have contacted Police Scotland for comment.
