We’re almost officially one week away from the 2020 NFL Draft and it will be one in which the Jacksonville Jaguars must seize. With 12 picks in the draft, most think they will snag a receiver early in the draft, and if they guess right, they would fix a big need.
Here are some guys in each of the top-3 rounds they could be interested in:
Round 1 – Justin Jefferson, LSU
If the Jags go receiver in the first round, it may be at No. 20 as opposed to No. 9. That makes Justin Jefferson a good fit for them as most grade him as a top-25 selection in terms of big boards.
Jefferson impressed at the combine, running a 4.43 40-yard dash and registering a vertical jump of 37.5 and a broad jump of 126.0 (10th best amongst the receivers group). He’d be perfect to pair with deep threat receiver and former LSU teammate D.J. Chark, handling all of the dirty work in the middle as he did with the Tigers. He’d also offer Garner Minshew II a possessions receiver with a wide catch radius and sure hands.
Round 2 – Tee Higgins, Clemson
Tee Higgins didn’t take the field for any drills during the combine and elected to wait for Clemson’s Pro Day. There he proved what most suspected: He’s a player who won’t put up crazy test numbers, however, the potential is there.
He should be available in the second round when the Jags pick and is a player who receivers coach Keenan McCardell could get the best out of as he’s done for D.J. Chark and company. At 6-foot-4, 216-pounds, Higgins would give the Jags a big target with versatility, good instincts, and good body control, all of which are traits that can help the Jags and that McCardell can work with.
Round 3 – Van Jefferson, Florida
Van Jefferson was an under the radar player for the Gators, but scouts and journalists are finally realizing his potential. When popping in the film on him, immediately you can see his route running abilities, which allows him to separate. I believe if he had consistent quarterback play early in his tenure he’d be well known.
Again, the traits that Jefferson offers are what the Jags need as their unit has plenty of speed and size. On film, Jefferson’s precision with route running gave off vibes of Allen Robinson, a player who the Jags have missed for quite some time.
