A woman was ordered to pay £2,000 after dumping this rubbish in an alley

A woman has been ordered to pay more than £2,000 after dumping rubbish behind her house then missing a court hearing.

Bolton council officers spotted the waste during a routine patrol.

Kate Greenhough, 26, of Chorley Old Road in Bolton , told a council enforcement team that she had left the rubbish, which included lampshades, a wooden pallet, shelving and bin bags, ‘for a friend to remove’.

When challenged about the mess, Ms Greenhough became un-cooperative and shut the door on them, a Bolton council spokesman said.

Ms Greenhough’s partner then 'made a threatening phone call to one of the officers'.

Three days later, despite repeated attempts to contact Ms Greenhough, the waste was still there, with Bolton council footing the bill for its removal, a spokesman said.

A fixed penalty notice of £80 was not paid by Ms Greenhough, who was then ordered to attend Bolton Magistrates’ Court.

Ms Greenhough did not attend her court date on March 29 and was found guilty in her absence of illegally depositing rubbish.

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “This case will hopefully act as a deterrent and make people think before fly-tipping waste.

“There are no excuses for fly-tipping and for the behaviour displayed by this resident and her partner.

“Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and we would always urge people to dispose of their waste properly.

“We will do everything we can to identify culprits who dump waste and those who think they’ll get away with it should expect a knock on the door”.

In a statement after the case, a Bolton council spokesman said: "The household waste included a large wooden pallet, shelving, a lampshade, and black bags dumped at the back of Chorley Old Road.

"Greenhough told an officer that she and her partner had put it there for a friend to remove over the weekend.

"She then became uncooperative, shut the door and refused to speak any further to the enforcement officer.

"Later that day Greenhough’s partner made a threatening phone call to the enforcement officer.

"Three days later the waste was still there, and the officer had to arrange for its removal.

"Despite repeated attempts, the enforcement officer was unable to make contact with Greenhough to resolve the issue."

Ms Greenhough was fined £1,173, ordered to pay costs of £859, as well as a victim’s surcharge of £117, totalling £2,149.
