A woman in Stockport is handing out sleeping bags you can wear to people sleeping rough - and needs money for more

A woman from Stockport has started a campaign to raise money for wearable sleeping bags for the homeless.

Gail McDermott, 57, hopes to raise £2,000 to distribute bags which allow wearers to walk around and keep warm.

She hopes to distribute them throughout the year, with the help of homelessness charities across Greater Manchester.

Gail started a GoFundMe page after handing out knitted supplies to people sleeping on the streets last year with her daughter.

She said: “It was very touching for us both to see people on the streets.

“I realised that after winter, everyone forgets about homeless people.

"“It became cold again and I realised I’m not doing anything.”

After researching options for warm items to donate, Gail came across the ‘onesie’ sleeping bags.

She said: “I’ve already handed a few out in Cheadle.

“I spoke to a homeless man who had been on the streets for two years. He was grateful for the help.”

The GoFundMe page isn’t the only way Gail hopes to raise awareness of the campaign, either.

Gail is buying wearable sleeping bags from Amazon (amazon.co.uk/wing)

She hopes to do a sponsored silence at the start of January, and hand out cards to people asking for donations.

More details of Gail’s campaign can be found here.
