NSW Police have declared a critical incident after a woman died as a result of a crash near Taree Monday afternoon.

Police say a Highway Patrol officer had observed a Ford Falcon travelling on Bulga Road near Wingham when the officer made a U-turn and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

The Falcon was located further along Bulga Road a short time later having collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, Police said.

The female driver suffered fatal injuries and died.

The male driver of the other vehicle - a Hiace van - suffered some injuries that were not be life-threatening and was taken to John Hunter Hopsital for treatment, police said.

A crime scene has been established at the crash site and will be examined by officers from Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit.

That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the Coroner.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact CrimeStoppers.
