A woman has died after falling from a bridge over the M60

A woman has died after falling from a bridge over the M60.

The incident happened close to junction 23 near Ashton-under-Lyne on Wednesday (June 9).

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the scene at about 10.30am.

Both carriageways were closed for about two and a half hours and there were three mile tailbacks in the area.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called just after 10.30am this morning (Wednesday 9 June) to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman on a bridge near Junction 23 of the M60.

"The woman fell from the bridge a short time later.

"Emergency services attended, but despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
