A woman has died, and a man has been seriously injured after a shark attack at a beach in Crowdy Bay, a township on NSW’s mid-north coast.
It has since been reported that the man and woman were Swedish nationals who were known to each other. The woman, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene, with the man flown in critical condition to John Hunter Hospital.
The incident was reported to emergency services at 6.30am this morning, with witnesses at the scene attempting first aid. One witness created a tourniquet around the man’s injured leg using a swimsuit, which NSW Ambulance Mid North Coast zone manager Superintendent Josh Smyth said “potentially saved his life”. “The courage from some bystanders is amazing in the situation,” he added.

The attack happened near Kylies Beach campground inside Crowdy Bay National Park, and according to Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steven Pearce, the location of the attack was very remote. “There’s no lifeguarding services up there at all,” he told reporters this morning. He also said that sharks had been seen in the Kylies Beach area before and that it was very popular. “This is just a very unfortunate incident where two people have been attacked in a really idyllic location,” he added.
Manning/Great Lakes chief inspector Timothy Bayly told media that beaches in the area, including North Haven Beach, Pilot Beach and Dunbogan Beach, are now closed for an undetermined period, as the Department of Primary Industries conducts drone surveillance to locate the shark and determine its species, with NSW Fisheries teams deploying smart drum lines with baits in an attempt to capture the shark.
